Buddy I had to follow the bread crumbs from the Blind Pig and the Acorn, Celebrating Appalachia, The Presley Girls and Paul Wilson to get to your channel this morning. You are sure blessed to come from such a strong and talented family. I come from a family of front porch (or living room) pickers who enjoy being with family and playing guitar, and especially hearing our dad sing some of the old tunes. This song really spoke to my soul. I understand deeply “the smell of your old guitar”. Most of the guitars the family had around were modest, or sometimes even cheap and repaired garbage or garage sale finds. But when I was about 8 years old in the early 1970s, just like in the song, my dad bought my uncle a 1966 Martin D-18. It made my uncle cry. It had a black case with green furry lining and the guitar smelled amazing when you popped the case open and pulled out the beauty. That smell was only second to the amazing sound. My uncle passed away 31 years ago. Dad became the steward of the Martin afterwards. My nephew will ultimately get it to steward, but right now it’s with me. I have another Martin D-18. It has its own smell, but not like the 66. When I pop the case for the 66 and the smell wafts up, I’m 8 again. Sorry for the length of the comment, but I wanted you to know I really understand. I think I’ll go pop open that ol’ black case with the green lining and listen to your song again.
